In
the 60's Jim Dunn of Firemans Quickie fame ran one in his record
holding dragster were first introduced in the late 1930's to early
1940's by Mendel "Cookie" Ledington. The original location of Cook's
Machine Works was in Cookie's garage at his home in Los Angeles,
where the Cyclone head was made. Starting off with a 4 port marketed
under the name of COOK, This led to a Flathead A/B head for four
bangers, the 21 stud which included all applications by ultilizing a
single pattern and altering it's form, next came the 24 stud head
for use on the late 1938-1948 engines, the 3 pot intake and lastly
the quickchange. Due to a large demand of Cookies machining talent
by other people, such as George Riley (2 and 4 Port cylinder
heads-whose own shop was several blocks over on Floral Ave.) George
Wight and Roy Richter-Bell Auto Parts (Cragar Heads), Victor
Edelbrock Sr.(24 Stud cylinder heads and intakes) a larger facility
was needed in order to accomodate such business. Which brings us to
the present location of Cyclone @ Cook's Machine Works It has been
here since the early 40's. A Corrogated steel building built during
2nd World War was deemed necesarry as the demand for maching talents
increased which still to this day is where Hot Rodders come when
they demand perfection. Cook himself passed away in 1991, he stayed
active in machining till the end, both @ Cook's and a shop at his
home in Lake Arrowhead,CA. In 1976 The shop was sold to his grandson
Bill Cannon and a Partner Jim Mc Caslin, Bill sold out a few years
later to Jim, who coincedentially used to machine all of the
quickchange center sections and ran a Flathead powered dragster out
of the shop when Cookie owned it. So whatever product you are
interested in has quite a history.
